BIOGRAPHY

For most of his life Charlie Spratt has been associated with art one way or another. His gifted ability to draw became well known as far back as public school and followed his career through an engineering degree and into the business world.   Great art must come from the creative instincts within. It is obvious in the work of Charles Spratt that his inspiration derives from painting directly from nature; where he can absorb the sounds and smells, feel the wind and rain, and interpret colour first hand. In the artist's words, "Watercolour lets me explore the wonderful effects of light and shadow - it helps me to convey my personal sense of communion that I experience as I stand and observe from some small corner of my world."

Originally, Charlie, now in his sixtieth year, trained and worked in oils. He now paints exclusively in water based media. He has travelled from coast to coast to paint on location, but finds that his best loved subjects are in his own backyard: favoured locations include rural Ontario and Quebec, especially Algonquin Park, Haliburton, the Laurentians and Charlevoix.

At his last two solo exhibitions "Northern Legacy" and "Northern Legacy II", many of the works were sold on opening night.  The artist teaches both portrait and landscape painting and routinely gives workshops in many parts of Canada, sharing more than twenty years of painting experience. He has appeared on television numerous times to demonstrate and discuss his work and many artists have benefited from his recently published book "From Oils to Watercolour". His work has received numerous awards.

At the Big Brother Annual Art Auction held in Ottawa each year, his paintings have been personally selected for singular awards by Honorary Patrons Robert Bateman, Ted Harrison, Toni Onley and Horace Champagne. At the 1997 National Capital Fine Art Festival the artist was picked as "Artist of the Year" for his painting "The Cedars". This painting is being reproduced for the 1997 Kidney Foundation of Canada Christmas card.  The artist is a past president of the Manotick Art Association and Ottawa Watercolour Society. He is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters In Watercolour (CSPWC) and the Ottawa Watercolour Society (OWS).

Since 1980 the artist has devoted a great deal of time to his art.  He has studied with some of the best artists in Ottawa and painting trips have taken him from coast to coast. Over the years he has been represented by galleries in Ottawa, Toronto, Markham, Perth, and Montreal and he has had major one man shows at all of them but Montreal.   Five years ago an aquired allergy to the oil paint forced the artist to turn to water based media in his on going search for artistic expression. Today the artist feels that his large watercolour and acrylic paintings are superior to his previous work in oils.   Charlie teaches frequently and gives workshops in different parts of Ontario including Algonquin Park. He has appeared on television numerous times to give demonstrations and discuss his work.

The artist has received many awards of recognition for his work. Included are the patrons award by Robert Bateman at the 1986 Big Brother Art Auction, the Juror's Choice at the MAA 'Dam Art Show' in 1988 & 89 and first and third prize and the Morton Baslaw award at the 1990 and 1992 Ottawa Watercolour Society shows. At the Big Brother Annual Art Auctions in 1992 and l993 his work was selected by Honourary Patrons Ted Harrison and Toni Onley for their personal choice awards.

The artist is a past president of the Manotick Art Association and a fellow member of the Ottawa watercolour Society.
