BIOGRAPHY
A Newfoundlander, Doug has traveled extensively and has lived in Europe and in various parts of Canada as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He has been a competitor in various sports throughout the years, which included soccer and badminton at the regional and national level. Doug practices Martial Arts as a hobby and the Visual Arts as a profession. He presently resides in Springdale, Newfoundland.
Doug is primarily a self-taught artist. He completed a Commercial Art program at the College of Trades and Technology and the 1st. year of a Fine Arts Degree program through Memorial University. Doug is well versed in many mediums including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolour, coloured pencil, pyrography, pen and ink, graphite and wood carving.
Periodically throughout the years, Doug has shared his love of art through private teaching and high school instruction. Doug is currently teaching art in the provincial school system.
Doug has exhibited and sold at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa. His work has been juried in St. John's, Newfoundland, by Devon House Arts and Crafts Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. Doug's work was the recipient of a First Place Award at Spruce Meadows Agricultural Fair in Calgary, Alberta. His work has exhibited and sold at the Corner Brook Arts and Crafts Council Fall Show as well as other shows across Newfoundland and Labrador. Doug has held group and solo exhibitions at Memorial University Extension in Goose Bay Labrador and has held personal showings in Corner Brook and Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland.
Artwork has been presented to a former premier of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as to a Lieutenant Governor. Work has been commissioned and purchased by the Department of National Defense and various business corporations. Purchases have also been made by various institutions such as Springdale Hospital Corporation, Valley Vista Seniors Complex and the College of the North Atlantic. Works have been purchased through Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Procurement. Doug's work has been represented by various galleries provincially and nationally. Doug is currently represented in St. John's, NL by Spurrell Gallery, in Charlottetown, PEI by Mermaid Art Gallery and in Tweed, Ontario by Studio 737 Art Gallery.
Doug's work has sold nationally and internationally.
