Joanne's fine art career began in 1995, and she is already regarded
as an accomplished artist, skilled in many media and styles.
Joanne's understanding of various media, tools, equipment, anatomy,
kinetics, drapery, colour, marketing and advertising was enhanced by her
previous education and experience in the fine crafts. Her experience is
from: professional sewing business administration, lab science, teaching,
physical education, referee/coach, player in many sports, silkscreen and
trophy business.
After Joanne was sidelined by sports injuries, she was forced
to find new avenues to direct her energies. During a year of physio
and rehab, Joanne passed the time painting and drawing. She discovered
a new passion. After a few art classes, many art books and magazines,
endless experiments and tests, countless studies, life drawing sessions,
and fast increasing popularity, Joanne became a full time professional
artist. Her total devotion, passion and skill is evident in all her
work.
Her work is in collections throughout the U.S.A., Canada, Africa,
England, Sweden, Japan and many other parts of the world.
She has participated in many group, juried and solo shows; both
local and national. She has been interviewed by CBC radio, WPBS TV,
CKWS TV and various papers and magazines.
Joanne's artwork is diverse in media, style and subject matter.
She is equally adept at humorous ink caricatures or life size portrait
pastels.
Nostalgic oil paintings in pure bright colours and children
with undeniable charm, in settings recognized and fondly remembered by
all who have experienced Canadian hockey, mini soccer and other kids games,
make these paintings family heirlooms.
Joanne's portraits in oils, acrylics, or pastels, go far beyond
the simple depiction of someone's face. They capture the soul and
personality of the subject, often capturing the model at a favourite activity.
Since beginning portraits in 1996, Joanne has created a striking series
of musicians, dancers, athletes, professionals, politicians, tradesmen
and many others.
Joanne's series of acrylic monopaints are striking little jewels
of colour and texture. Highly pigmented flow acrylics are used
to create a painting onto glass, from which a print, using paper or board
is taken. Each print is unique and requires great patience and merciless
editing to be successful. Most monoprints are untitled, inviting
the viewer's imagination to resolve the abstract patterns.
Joanne's gestural studies, usually in ink, are renown for their
spontaneity, simplicity and humour. They are little glimpses of a
moment in time during a dancers step, a musicians note, a karate move or
a twisting nude. These little works are wonderful whimsical pieces
that add pleasure to a collection of art.
