BIOGRAPHY
John Alexander Day was born
in Scotland in 1957 and continued his career
later in England.
Since emigrating to Canada
in 1989, he has taken a deep interest in the Canadian
landscape.
He has an admiration for the work of the Group of Seven and
especially
Tom Thomson, but wanted to see if he could express his
own vision of Canada.
Painting has been John's
passion for over 20 years. In his work, he tries to capture the
subtle and changing qualities of light. His influence has come
primarily from the
French and American impressionist schools.
Painting directly in front
of the motif has been his main source of inspiration for
capturing
the fleeting effects of light. In nature light can change
throughout the
day, so he is constantly challenged to get his
impressions down quickly. John
uses the small sketches done on
location as his starting point for his larger
paintings back in his
studio. Only by working outdoors does he feel his work
will be more
truthful towards nature and be more original in terms of
composition
and colour.
He has set out to document
his adopted country from one cost to the other.
To date he has
managed to paint in 7 different provinces, stretching from Prince
Edward Island in the east, to British Columbia in the west, and into
the Yukon Territory.
John Alexander Day's works
are in private collection in the United States,
the United Kingdom
and across Canada.
