Born in Estonia and brought up in Scotland, Kai-Liis came to Canada at the age of 12. After graduating from the University of Toronto as a Physical and Occupational Therapis, she spent the next several years working in England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand, and travelling extensively in Britain, Europe, the Middle and Far East, and "Down Under".
Originally painting in transparent watercolour, she now enjoys the challenges of combining watercolour with mixed media. Subject matter ranges from the realistic to the frankly whimsical, according to her mood. Chubby flying pigs with ornate teacups balanced on their noses swoop down to the butler at the tea-table one day. The next day memories of annual teaching forays to the Passamaquoddy Bay and Deer Island call forth misty seashores - you can almost hear the seagulls!
After years of splitting her time between family (four daughters), a career as a pediatric physiotherapist, and a busy art schedule, Kai-Liis is now enjoying life as a full-time professional visual artist.
Besides serving as a juror for art exhibitions, Kai-Liis was the Founding President of the Kame and Kettle Artists, and the instigator and co-organizer of the successful Hills of Mulmur Studio Tour.
In addition to numerous solo and group shows, her watercolours have been accepted into major juried shows in Canada and the United States, and have also been exhibited in Estonia. Over her 15 year painting career she has won over 40 awards. Kai-Liis enjoys painting commissions of homes and barns, and has designed a series of cards, childrens' alphabet and number posters, and the visual component of an educational slide series for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Much of her inspiration for her work comes from the expansive hill countryside around her, from her childhood in Scotland, and her love of children, flowers, and old buildings.
A popular watercolour instructor, Kai-Liis regularly teaches workshops
in her own studio, as well as for galleries, art associations, Arts Councils,
summer schools, and the Dufferin County Board of Education.
Watercolours by Kai-Liis hang in private and corporate collections throughout North America, Europe and Australia.
