I didn't decide anything. Does one decide to breathe? Do we
decide that legs are made for walking? We don't decide a thing. We take
the path because of certain affinities, tendencies, attraction to landscapes
like by instinct without deciding it's ahead, it's the future. Like the
setting of the sun we head towards it by curiosity and because of its great
beauty that attracts us. We go towards its size, this display of marvels,
of color, of magic. The notes that are inside us because of certain resemblances,
attraction towards nature, the countryside, the scenery, the panorama that
spreads out and stretches in front of us. It's not a choice, it's a "sensation".
Choosing watercolour was a matter of taste. As an amateur at
the beginning because my profession demanded all my energies. Since I retired,
I've attacked watercolours "ten days a week". This medium must be manipulated
regularly every day during many hours a day and you must persevere if you
want to succeed. The more one paints and the better it works. "If you have
the chance to have every hour of your life ahead of you..." There are so
many tricks, materials to use, to discover. It's a research medium that
surprises at each stroke of the brush, of pigment and of water. The different
kinds of paper are also to be discovered. There are damp and dry techniques
and it adapts so well to drawing. I love to draw and you can't put color
on a bad drawing. There aren't too many mysteries where watercolours are
concerned. The theory is abundantly explained in the manuals, especially
written by painters of our era. It's a medium full of spontaneity, of surprises,
of a relative stability. There are no rules. We know during the ride if
certain corners must be finished and detailed. It's free, complete. It
can be executed according to a plan, or spontaneously, often surprising.
It's personality escapes us but by learning about it we finally master
it and dominate it. It's full of unexpected. Each time, it's a new start.
I attack it with a force which is mine, real. I salute it with big brush
strokes. I have a taste for it. It's my road companion...In addition, there's
this watercolour club which I like a lot. By plane, on boats, etc., soldiers
and reporters paint. On the battlefield, the hunters paint with their fingers.
Above all, I paint for my own pleasure, and I want to please myself all
the time.
I have a hobby...drawing. Free workshops with live models "I
devour them" five times a week. I go from one workshop to another. I'm
the model. My hobby is my pastime and my pastime is my hobby...drawing.
I founded in 1976 a school of drawing and watercolour under
the direction of professor Leslie Coppold, R.C.A. This non-profit school
located in Montreal is called "Academie des Beaux Arts" and is still functioning
very well. I've really liked this adventure and those who leave this school
are no longer "art dummies"...
"Blessed be the painters because they will never be alone. Light
and colour, peace and hope will keep them company until the final end of
the day... or almost." W. Churchill
