BIOGRAPHY

Canadian artist Stephen Rothwell has been painting since 1985.  His work evokes a twinge of nostalgia, as well as memories of less complicated times and places.  As a full time artist, Stephen now dedicates his time to conveying the essence of the chosen subject, with special attention to capturing the light.  He travels extensively, always on the lookout for North American and European scenes that he can depict in his paintings.  Once he returns to his studio in Ottawa, or his boathouse studio on Newboro Lake, near Westport, Ontario, he uses photographs from his travels as a reference for his paintings.

The expertise gained over the years, in combination with the constant quest to develop new techniques, have evolved into his own unique style.  He is renown for developing the innovative technique of "watercolour without glass".  Artists from all over North America have attended his workshops, eager to emulate his loose style, bold use of colour, and ability to capture light in his paintings.

In 1997 he was the 'Artist in Residence', giving watercolour workshops aboard the Vista Fjord Cruise Ship on the Baltic Sea, visiting such ports as Hamburg, Estonia, Copenhagen, Stockholm, St. Petersburg and Helsinki.  Stephen was the winner of 'Best in Show - Original Art' at Kempenfest in Barrie, Ontario 1998; 'People's Choice Award' at the National Capital Fine Arts Festival 1999; 'People's Choice Award' Jekyll Island Georgia Art Festival 2003; First Place Professional Watercolour Category, Jekyll Island Art Festival 2003, 2004, 2005.  Stephen's work can be viewed at select galleries, and certain art shows throughout the year.

In February 2007, he will be having a one-man show at the gallery.  In Canada, Stephen is represented at Koyman Galleries in Ottawa and Toronto with his prints available at select shops throughout the Ottawa Valley.
