BIOGRAPHY
Sylvia Garay believes that an artist's painting reflects his/her past life. Whatever
she experiences is assimilated into her work. This philosophy is part of a more and more
widely held view that life and art are inseparable.
Sylvia Garay's work is largely influenced by the natural world and its colours, rhythms
and underlying abstract patterns. Painting and working in her garden is a continuing
challenge and joy and attests to the belief that art and life are inseparable.
Born in British Columbia, Garay has studied and painted in Victoria, Halifax, Ottawa and
the United Kingdom. She taught painting for several years in Halifax and Ottawa.
EDUCATION
Honours degree in Visual Arts, University of Ottawa, 1978, with further studies in Art
History. Attended Goldsmith's College of Art, Portsmourth College of Art and Highbury
Technical College (A Levels), including A-Level Art, in England. Attended seminars and art
classes in Halifax, N.S., (Ten Mile House); Victoria, B.C. (Art Gallery of Victoria) as
well as the Mary Schneider School of Art at Actinolite, Ontario, during several summers.
